On Wednesday 13 March 2024, the European Parliament approved the new Euro 7 emissions standard, and the emission limits in the final version of the regulation are less stringent for cars and trucks than previous proposals. A longer timeframe for the introduction of the standard has also been negotiated, which will be welcomed by carmakers who will have more time to prepare for the new rules.
The new emissions standard aims to move the EU towards clean mobility and improve air quality. The standard also reintroduces measures aimed at reducing emissions of micro-particles from tyre or brake wear, as well as measures on battery life, a parameter that is becoming increasingly important as electric cars become more widespread. It could be said that these are not only measures to reduce the impact on climate change, but also to protect people living around roads from the source of carcinogens.
And what about us road hauliers? There is a slight tightening of the former EURO VI for trucks and heavy goods vehicles, particularly for nitrogen emissions, but these are still technologically achievable parameters for truck manufacturers. The introduction of different levels of limits for particulate emissions from tyre or brake wear according to vehicle type is the aforementioned innovation. Only time will tell where these further regulations will actually lead and what awaits us in a future version of the standard…
